Jack makes the NSW team

Jack Dwarshuis – affectionately known as “Jacket” – by his 14A teammates, has been bestowed the honour of making the NSW PSSA team, following the footsteps of his big brother Ben.

Jack had an outstanding series at the NSW Carnival held at Maitland – bowling his outstanding line and length to catch the eye of selectors.

Congratulations Jack from everyone at the Engadine Dragons.  We wish you the best of luck at the Australian Championships in January.  The Engadine Dragons also congratulate Luke Miller and Nicholas Amos on their outstanding performances in Maitland in a Sydney East team that ran third, ably coached by John Stivaktas.

Jack playing in his first Traditional Cricket match - even as an eight year old - the seam was upright.

Jack doing what he does best - knocking over the stumps!

The 2 Phantoms – Round 4

UNDER 8A’s CLUB RECORD:

Our little under 8A guys have done it again. Not only did they establish a new club record in Round 3 scoring a total of 175 against Illawong, but they turned up again in Round 4 scoring 164 against Como.

We could rightly give the whole team a mention in dispatches because, to be honest, nobody failed. Ty Parkes 25, Luke Mecham 21, Beau McInerney 17, Matthew Hull 14, Luke Morgan 13 and Ben Walker 8, were all not out, while Kye Robson 12 and Dom Spowart 11, lost their wicket only once.

And don’t forget, these little blokes scored these run totals off only 24 overs. Also, each batting pair only get 6 overs to put their runs on the board.

GREAT VICTORY BY OUR 12C JUNIORS :

Round 4 saw a terrific win by our energetic and enthusiastic 12C team over competition front-runners Caringbah down at Kingswood Road Oval.

The game was played under the new “Split Innings” rule where both teams split the batting and bowling on both days of each round with the winner being declared at the end of the second day.

And, thanks to some great bowling by our Dragons bowlers, Ben Grimison 2 for 14, Jonah Newton 2 for 12, and Sam Lynch (Grandson of Sutherland Junior Cricket legend Jim Lynch) Caringbah were actually bowled out on the second day for 128 facing only 38 of their allotted 50 overs.

However, at the change of innings on day 2, the bottom line was, that Engadine still needed 75 runs to win with only 5 wickets left in the shed. And, at 3 runs an over, on the slow Kingswood ground, meant victory was still a fair ways off.

Undaunted by the challenge, Ryan Collins 41 and Dylan Parkes 40 not out, and Ben Grimison 11, were outstanding with the bat, with Dylan and Daniel Travers getting the Dragons home off the last ball of the last over of play as players, coaches, managers, parents, and spectators alike rushed onto the ground to embrace each other in a thrilling and unforgettable climax to a great game.

Who said junior cricket wasn’t exciting ay ?

GO BEN :

To follow up on his round 3 century, young B1 batsman Ben Latham has struck a golden seam of good form with the bat ever since that first ever ton, scoring 55 not out in round 4 and 85 not out in round 5.

He’s become a very good opener this guy. He plays into the ‘V’ when he needs to, he drives along the ground, and puts anything short away for four.

OTHER SENIOR STANDOUTS IN ROUND 5 :

In Ben Latham’s B1 game against Bangor down at Gwawley, Wade Horsnell took 6 for 31. And he reckons he was just getting warmed up.

Then, even two outstanding batting performances by John Sheehy 94 and John Mifsud 54, couldn’t stave off defeat in the B3 match against Como up at Heathcote.

But the B4′s got home thanks to an inspired batting and bowling performance by Nathan McNamara. How about this bloke. He scores 101 in the Dragons first innings against Kareela down a Sutho 2, then takes his pads off and chimes in with 5 wickets to secure the points. Can’t forget Andrew Watts though, he was busy at the other end scoring an unbeaten 66. Do it all again next week ay ?

WHERE’S MUM AND DAD ?

We get around to a lot of junior games every weekend and rarely do we see a game that is not well attended by the parents of the players involved.

Youngsters love to look over and see mum and/or dad urging them on from the sideline.

However, we watched a game recently where there were hardly any parents present at all. (We wont say which one) It was a shame really, and, the thing is, we have no idea why this was the case.

Maybe it was just a one-off thing, or a clash with other kids sport elsewhere, or sickness in the family, or a bit of each. Don’t know really.

But do you know what ? We reckon kids need our encouragement in their every endeavour these days wherever it may be. Much more than they ever did before.

But the thing we really love to see is the grandparents on the sideline, sometimes accompanying the parents, and sometimes filling in for the parents. Either way, they offer a sense of support and stability to youngsters and that’s a good thing.

TRIGGER TIME RECALL :

As a batsman, have you ever wondered what might be a good way to recapture the mood you were in during your best ever innings ?

Well, here’s a technique that works for some.

When you go to the crease and have taken block, lean over your bat and squeeze the grip hard with both hands for 5 seconds while at the same time thinking back to that moment of your best innings and how well you were seeing the ball and how great you felt at that time.

They call this technique “Trigger Time Recall”

You can buy me a schooner the next time you see me if it works for you.

Anyway, that’s it for one old Phantom.
I’m sorry but I’m off to begin a new adventure elsewhere.
It’s been really good to know all of you.

The 2 Phantoms – Round 3

CLUB BOWLING RECORD BY ROBBIE KNIGHT

HEY ROBBIE - GIVE US A BREAK WILL YA ?

Round 3 saw yet another club record fall by the wayside when Robbie Knight from the Dragons senior C1 team took a sensational 6 wickets in each innings in his team’s game against Illawong up at Boys Town. Yes, you heard correctly, 6 in each dig, that’s 12 wickets for the match.

His first innings figures of 14 overs 6 for 39 was good enough, but then he handed in almost identical figures in Illawong’s second time around, 12.2 overs 6 for 41, and, unsurprisingly, the Dragons won outright.

And do you know what ? Most cricketers would be content if they took 12 wickets in a season, let alone in one game. And this guy had a serious back operation just over 12 months ago. So, quite an impressive come-back don’t you think ?

And it has been reported that Robbie, making light of his achievement, said after the match that he almost pulled a muscle in his shoulder having to keep holding the match ball aloft.

That kind of bowling deserves an ONYA AWARD.

JAMES BILLS MAKES FIRST GRADE DEBUT :

One of our many talented juniors to go on and play Grade cricket, James (Jimmy) Bills was called up to play First Grade last weekend down at Glenn McGrath Oval Caringbah against Manly.

This is quite an achievement by this modest and unassuming young man who started his cricket career not at all certain whether he had a future in the game or not.

James originally played with the Heathcote Cricket Club before joining the Dragons in our 14B team several years back and, we think even he would agree, that he did struggle somewhat in his first couple of years in the game.

However, we just happen to know for a fact, that he applied himself, in just about as determined a way as it is possible to apply one’s self, to eventually overcome any inadequacies he felt he had, and blossom into a player of true first class potential.

It just goes to show, if you want it bad enough, whatever it might be in life, you can do it. It is possible.

And would you believe ? He took his first wicket in his first bowling spell for Sutho.

IS THERE A PLAYER REGISTRATION DECLINE ?

We went back through our club records to see if it is true that interest in cricket is getting less each year and made some interesting discoveries.

SENIORS :

In the 1961-62 season there were 97 registered to play Senior Cricket with the club.

Today there are 83 registered Senior Comp players which is good these days compared to other clubs in the Shire.

JUNIORS :

In 1961-62 there were 67 registrations to play Junior Cricket.
3 years later there were 116 Junior registrations.

Today there are 121 registered Junior Comp players. This is also pretty good by comparison. Especially when you consider the sporting opportunities around today.

So, basically, even though the population in and around Engadine has quadrupled since the club’s beginning, the numbers of players has remained more or less the same.

But not so throughout the Sutherland Shire though, where the number of junior players has dropped by over 250 for this season alone.

SO WHY DON’T MORE KIDS PLAY CRICKET ?

The question is, why aren’t more kids attracted to cricket.

Is it because the Aussie National team is not doing as well as they once did ?

Maybe it’s because there are no real super stars these days and the good players aren’t grabbing the headlines the way they used to.
Or is it because there are easier and less demanding sporting pursuits out there ?

THE GAME IS EASIER TO PLAY :

It’s a fact that over the years the Junior Cricket Association has done an enormous amount to make the junior game easier for all levels of ability to play, to make the game safer to play, and generally to make the game more exciting and enjoyable for all young kids regardless of their ability.

For the younger kids playing cricket the games are shorter with both teams batting and bowling on the same day. and where everyone gets an opportunity to bat, bowl and field in every game. Can’t see much wrong with that.

BUT IS THE GAME SAFER ?

The protective equipment available these days is truly amazing. The helmets, the batting gloves and pads, boxes etc are all cutting edge. And they do what they are supposed to do – protect.

The bats themselves are incredibly light yet powerful and make playing shots so much easier than the old ones.

When you pick up one of these New Bats you feel like you can’t wait to get out there in the middle and try it on.

Also the coaches are better qualified than they used to be. Special Coaching Schools are held regularly to update coaches on the latest techniques.

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE FOR A YOUNG CRICKETER ?

We’ve been asked many times if there is one piece of advice we could give to young cricketers that would help them during a game.

And this is what we reckon it should be :-

If you fail with the bat, make up for it with the ball,
If you fail with bat and ball, make up for it in the field.

Basically what that means is …..Become a genuine all-rounder

You can do it……It is possible

The 2 Phantoms – Round 2

SENIOR TEAMS DO IT AGAIN:

Round 2 saw our senior teams repeat their great start to the new season with some terrific and dominant performances.

BEN GETS A HUNDRED:

The highlight of the round was a dashing first ever century scored by Ben Latham 110, who shared a match winning partnership with James Stone 62 in their B1 game against Caringbah at Woronora Heights Oval. Ben’s hundred was the best batting score in the Shire for the round. Onya Ben.

Other top batting efforts were from evergreen Steve Vella 59 in the A1′s, Matt Russell 58 in the B5′s, and that man again Andrew Roberts 55 in the B4′s after his 7 wickets the previous round. Come on Andy, give us a break.

DUNCAN BROTHERS DO IT RIGHT :

You know, every now and then, if you look closely at the statistics of a game, you see something really special. Like the wicket-keeping performance of Jaryd Duncan from the B5′s match against Miranda down at Scylla Bay Oval in round 2.

Talk about taking control of a match…he takes 4 catches in Miranda’s first innings and concedes no byes…..then rolls up in Miranda’s second dig and takes 2 more catches, plus 2 stumpings and allows only 1 bye.
To add more glory to the Duncan household, 4 of his 6 catches were off his brother Jordan’s bowling, who finished the day with 5 for 18.

And, oh yes, they defeated Miranda outright.

Two more stand-out bowling performers were :-
Michael Daly (B4) 5 for 37 against Miranda over at The Ridge and,
Aaron Gibson’s (B1) 4 for 49 against Sports at Woronora Heights.

MORE GOOD EFFORTS BY OUR JUNIORS :

Last season’s Junior Club Champion Dane Fisher from the 16A’s got off to a good start this season scoring 66 runs and taking 2 wickets in his team’s win over Caringbah Sports up at Heathcote Oval.
Good to see two youngsters from the under 12A team Andrew Ritchie and Cameron Westlake each taking 2 wickets for 4 runs to help secure victory over DLS at Woolooware High School Oval. The following Sunday young Andrew took 5 wickets for only 1 run in his under 11 Rep team’s win over Illawarra.

Other top bowlers in round 2 were :-
Jack Schuetrim – (14C) 3 for 6 against Illawong at Boys Town,
Luke Tripi – (12D) 3 for 7 against Caringbah at Canberra Road,
Jacob Gunn – (8B) 3 for 11 against Miranda at Sylvania Heights,
Sam Gibson – (14E) 3 for 11 against Caringbah at Kirrawee Oval,
Michael Betts – (10A) 3 for 19 against Bangor at Preston Park and
Alex Roberts – (16A) 3 for 21 against Caringbah at Heathcote Oval.

NEW UNDER 8 CLUB RECORD :

Round 2 saw a club record created by young Ty Parkes, one of our under 8 boys, who captured 5 wickets for only 9 runs in his match down at Sylvania Heights Oval.

It was the third best bowling performance of any team in the Sutherland Shire for the round. He then backed that up by top scoring the following Saturday with 28 runs in his team’s win over Gymea.
You know, we have to remind ourselves that the little under 8′s are just that….they are little. So that when one of them hands in a performance like this, it sure makes you sit up and take notice.

TAKE A STEP BACK IN TIME :

We wonder how many readers can recognise players or friends of today from this 10B’s photo taken during the 1966-67 season ? The old Box Brownie was pulled out of mothballs to take this classic picture. We’ve identified most of them. See how many of these youngsters you know today.

1966-67 UNDER 10B RUNNERS UP

L to R - Back Row - Stephen Ralph, Peter Murray, Peter Noakes, Ross Morrison, Stewart Ralph, Pippa George, Ian Cranston(Capt), & Ross Bardsley. Middle Row - Peter Keenan, David Hams, Peter Robbins, Bert Alley, Garry Macken. Front Row - Brett Johnson (Keeper) Unidentified Player. George Cranston (Coach) Absent

The 2 Phantoms – Round 1

RECORD BY DRAGONS SENIOR TEAMS

In an unparalleled beginning to the new season our senior men’s teams have produced the most outstanding and record breaking performances in the history of the club.

No fewer than five batsmen scored dynamic centuries, together with some of the best bowling displays ever seen so early in a season.

DRAGON CENTURIONS IN ROUND 1:

These guys all cracked hundreds in round 1 – Can you believe that:-

C1 – Martin McKenzie 164 Vs Gymea at Gymea Bay Oval.
C2 – Sam Haynes 125 Vs Bosco at Loftus Oval.
B9 – Dean McMillan 119 Vs Gymea at Kingswood Road.
B5 – Greg Ings 117 Vs St Pats at Gwawley East.
B4 – Luke Richards 102 not out Vs Seagulls at Gwawley West.

MORE BATTING ACHIEVERS IN ROUND 1:

A1 – Paul Barnes 54 and Jordan Dow 41 Vs Heathcote at Jannali Oval.
B2 – Drew Lake 73 Vs Illawong at Solander.
B3 – Trevor McGuire 62 n/o and Anthony Campy 50 Vs SUSC at Kareela.
B4 – Andrew Watts 84 Vs Seagulls at Gwawley West.
B7 – Andrew Herne 74 Vs Gymea at Woolooware High School.
C2 – Matt Reynolds 86 Vs Bosco at Loftus Oval.

STAR BOWLER OF THE ROUND: ANDREW ROBERTS

And what about this bloke, 7 wickets for 49 runs off 11.5 overs with only one sundry a no-ball. But there were no maidens, so that suggests the batsmen were able to score off him. The only thing was they kept getting out.

When we first saw that a guy named Andrew Roberts from the B4 side took 7 wickets for 49 against Seagulls down at Gwawley West, we couldn’t help but think back to that great West Indian fast bowler of the same name back in the1960′ and 70′s who blitzed the Aussie teams of that era.

The West Indian Andy Roberts was the Rolls Royce of fast bowlers who could late swing the ball both ways at 140 plus speed and always seemed to extract something from the flattest of wickets. Apparently our Andy looks to be following in the master’s footsteps.

MORE BOWLING ACHIEVERS IN ROUND 1

Matthew Carroll (A1) – 4 for 34 off 12 Vs Heathcote.
Wade Horsnell (B1) – 4 for 11 off 8 Vs Caringbah.
Doug Ritchie (B3) – 4 for 19 off 6 Vs SUSC at Kareela South
Stewart Lumsden (B6) – 4 for 26 off 15 Vs Gymea at Anzac 1
Darren Chapman (B7) – 4 for 27 off 9.2 Vs Gymea at Woolooware High.

THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF CRICKET:

Over the years there have been some low scores in Dragons club cricket but the first innings dig by our B2′s would take a bit of beating.

In reply to Illawong’s first innings of 132 the Dragons were only able to accumulate a less than modest total of just 21 runs with Sam Dent top scoring with 10.

Sure they were players short and the wind was blowing a gale, but this was possibly our lowest ever score in men’s cricket. (We’re checking our records)

The boys were sent back in of course and actually recovered well to register a 2nd innings score of 173 thanks mainly to the hitherto mostly reliable Drew Lake on 74 and John Westlake 35.

DRAGONS JUNIORS ALSO OFF TO A FLYING START:

It must have been the phase of the moon or some such thing because not only did our men’s teams perform, but all five of our A-grade junior sides won their first round 1 match’s as well.

It’s not often this happens in the very competitive A-grade comp especially when some people thought these youngsters would struggle in the top grade, so to win all 5 games was a special achievement.

HEY WHAT ABOUT US?

Yes, we do have junior teams other than our A-grade sides and we can tell you in all honesty we are equally proud of them. They truly are the backbone of the club.

These kids learn their cricket skills in the lower grade teams which eventually propels them into the upper echelons of the game.

And while they’re at it they truly enjoy what they do every Saturday morning.
Well, it can’t get much better than that.

EX JUNIORS BECOME COACHES:

Have you ever wondered where the club gets all their coaches? The simple answer is we get our coaches from a variety of places. Some we actively pursue because of their proven cricket coaching ability at the junior level and others seem to pop up out of the pavement just when you least expect it.

Two of the clubs most valued ex junior players have taken on the roll as coaches this season. Liam Herne and Jordan Dow just out of junior cricket, now coach the under 10A team and, from what we’ve been able to observe, they have a remarkable connection with those little under 10 guys.

Both Liam and Jordan are enthusiastic and intelligent young men and they truly know the game. We had the pleasure of coaching both these guys at rep level when they themselves were just 10 and 11 year olds, so they know what the kid’s game is all about.

But it’s the good spirited wholeheartedness they bring to the table that sets Liam and Jordon apart and immediately impresses the onlooker.

And do you know what? The kids love them.

THE 10A TEAM AND THEIR COACHES AT PRESTON PARK AFTER ROUND 1

YOU GOTTA MOVE BABY MOVE:

We just happened to be watching an under 12 game last weekend, (not involving Engadine Dragons teams) and we couldn’t help but notice how stationary the players in the fielding team were.

I remarked to my companion “The game has only been going 20 minutes and those kids are asleep already.”

For the next 20 minutes we watched misfield after misfield as fieldsmen were late arriving to the ball.

Cricket NSW did a study of fielding practices and found that a player expends more energy standing still than he would if he moved. Plus blood flow and energy levels are adrenalized if you move.
