2006/07 Finals Match Reports

16A's | 16C's | 14A's | 10A's | C1's

16A Blues Vs Illawong Menai at Waratah Oval

No final is legitimate without it's share of pre match dramas, and ours was no exception. Andrew Jones continues to find bones to break, this time his thumb, ruling him out of the opening batting position. Bryce Daenell's soccer commitments meant him going and coming through the days play. Sean Garton from our 16A Reds filled the breach well - thanks Sean. Skipper Ward whose toss/calling skills rate around a healthy 75% (for the opposition!) calls right this time to our joy, our first dig. Adam Dow who unselfishly raised his hand to open the innings with Sammy Newman falls early to a straight one, 1-5.

"Batting is a trial before an 11-man jury."

Richie Benaud on batting

Bryce and Sam add a solid 20 before Bryce almost belts the cover off a drive only to be snapped up in the covers, 2-25. Sam whose batting deeds have been one of our lynch pins this summer loses his middle peg, caught on the crease, 3-33. Our rock this season Ben Marciante hooks one of the rare fours and is looking the goods until his castle is also knocked over, ouch. 4-42. Our keeper Mitchell Floyd is a hard nut and a gritty fighter tailor made for this, he digs in hard, no worries, plenty to come!

Grant Johnson reaches double figures before lifting one to square leg, 5-67. Andrew Herne enters the arena. Thinking back a few months ago we were privy to his maiden century, another today Herney will do! 100 short of a ton. 6-69. At 96 Floyd misses a full toss, the ball is on line, 7-96 oh mother! Who's the terrier at the other end swinging like a gate in a gale? It's Bubbles Rice. The scene is set, fielders begin to scatter. Mark has always liked the aerial route, more room up there perhaps. Michael Dumbrell strides to the crease, strides back one run later, 8-97. Skipper Ward's captain's knock comes to an abrupt end 9-103. Daniels addition to our ledger is the same as Michaels, Andrews and Adams, 0000- two pair of spectacles.

Not much pressure on Sean batting at 11 promoted from the second side for a final! Stay with Mark at all costs comes the cry from the ever-aging coach going grayer by the minute. Bubbles' bubble is not ready to burst just yet. Finally we see some batting that has made us the scourge of all bowlers this season. One huge shot carries the longest boundary on the full, amazing. Our supporters cheers resemble a sellout crowd at the M.C.G. (well almost). Finally Mark tries to make a three out of an easy two to a long shot into the deep, run out for 45 magnificent runs. Sean at the other end has the red ink for 10* a great partnership of 35, giving us at least a defendable score. Cameron Heard took the decision as the non-batsman well, "as long as I get a bowl then". Cammy's time is very close.

The start we want, 1-5 from a run out. Michael Sharkey joins Dylan Dule; their two most talented batsmen who we have played against since the first final way back in the U/10A's. Dylan appears to want an early finish, throwing the bat at everything, caught behind, 2-14, Ben's first of three wickets. Game on. Tommy Aggett is beautifully set up by skipper Ward falling to a mistimed hook for a globe, 3-18. Sharkey is still there though holding tight, a hard boy to shift. Two wickets fall, 5-32, pressure on them continues to mount. Cameron's time comes; catching a screaming one handed caught and bowled from Dylan Nash, one of their top guns. Then the break we were after. Cameron's last ball in junior cricket traps Michael on the crease for an L.B.W. 6-39. A little "hey, you beauty". Heavy rain sends everyone scattering, a frustrating period.

Resuming, their lower order is reduced by one when a parent suddenly informs their coach her not out batsman/son has to leave for work, perhaps a very costly decision for flipping burgers or stacking shelves? Their tail enders fight hard and ever slowly grinding out valuable runs defying us to the last. The end comes in a mix up run out off Sam Newman's bowling and his accurate left arm throw to hit the stumps. The good guys 138 and our worthy opponents all out 100.

Some oddities to come from this final are: Both last wicket partnerships, our 35 and Illawong's 24 were the highest from both sides. Daniel Ward's poor average in winning the toss didn't carry on in finals, four wins in four finals, result four premierships, U/10A, U/12A, U/14A and seen as the flagship of junior cricket now the U/16A. A wonderful win, a great team of boys and families and never a better way to end junior careers for 10 of the 12 lads. Well done team!

Pendo.

16C Engadine Vs Caringbah Sports at Corea St

After two convincing victories leading into the final the whole team was quietly confident that we had peaked at the right time. The game was probably lost when we lost the toss and sent in as the majority of teams that bat first go on to win, but never the less the boys went out there fired up and willing to roll them cheaply. After about 15 overs it was looking very good for us as we had Caringbah reeling at 3-20 and then at drinks 3-48 after 38 overs. The boys couldn't quite captitlise on their brilliant start and Caringbah, with wickets in hand, were able to power themselves to 8/122. Bedi was particularly spectactular and after his first 8 over spell had the ominous figures of 0-1. The bowlers all round did perform well and the let down was two drop catches in the later stages of the innings.

2006/07 Under 16C
Finalist

So after the lunch break the boys prepared themselves to chase a formidable 123 but succumbed to some top class bowling from the openers to be a paltry 3-5 after the first two overs. A rearguard partnership from Dean and Jeremy regained some respectability but the challenge was too much for them with a disgraceful run out sending our innings into demise. But the boys didn't give up and showed true fighting spirit with a brilliant partnership by Brad (top scorer with 23) and Tenchy who almost took the game away from the opposition. But after some excellent shots Brad went a little but overboard and tried to hit a wide ball and induced a miscue that sat up easily for the fielder. The innings just collapsed after that and we ended up being dismissed all out for 91. During the last wicket partnership Anthony was able to get the Engadine supports cheering with the inevitable loss looming when he smacked one of their bowlers for 6!

Overall the season was fantastic for the players, coaches and parents and all the boys should be proud of the way they conducted themselves in very game and showed the true Engadine Dragons spirit. They worked hard and were deserved to be contenders in the grand final.

14A Engadine Vs St Patricks at Janalli Oval

The boys turned up for the big one fired up and ready to give St.Pats a fight. After beating them in both clashes so far this year the boys were fairly confident we could bring the trophy home. Nathan started us off well by winning the toss and sending St.Pats into the field. A combination of good bowling, strange shot selection and maybe a little bit of choking saw us in a heap of trouble at 7-40 with Joel holding up one end, eventually falling for a very well made 20. Liam, Hobbo, Hayden M (16*), and Matty Launt stuck around and fought hard to take us to 10-79. Worth a note is that our first four of the day was scored by Matt Launt….batting at 11!!! This was a slightly disappointing result after working hard all year but all of the boys were keen to get out on the field to roll St.Pats for less……not likely. A chance to bowl 11 overs before Lunch saw St.Pats sitting comfortably on 1-29 with our only wicket being Shayne Smith caught behind by Nathan from the lightning fast bowling of Hobbo.

Championship winning team

Lunch saw an opportunity to settle it down and prepare for one last lunge at the premiership. 1-29 and sports tab had us at $12.40 to come back from here but a quick fire-up by Jordy put the boys in good spirits and out they went to get smashed……well…….they were meant to get smashed. First ball after drinks Matt Brogan fell to Joel D'Imperio after a good catch to Dunny (between his legs!). Then we witnessed Bustling Barnsey the Destroyer bowl one of the best spells we've seen all year, starting with the wicket of Dylan Smith, very well caught by Hayden Smith……..3-31……At least we'll take a bit of respect out of the game…..Barnsey also took the next wicket of Addison Grinham from a screamer in Gully by Ryan to make it 4-32. Barnsey shortly after finished his spell with the figures of 5 overs, 5 maidens, 2 wickets for 0 runs, FREAK!!! Joel continued his spell of the year catching Zac Wedesweiler plumb in front to make it 5-38. By this stage there were two faintings and 46 broken voices on the sideline as supporters and coach were screaming with the fall of each wicket. After a steadying 10 run partnership Benny D struck by claiming Jack Jamison, thank god our six foot monster Hobbo was there at mid wicket as he took a good high catch…….6-48.

Wait a minute, make it 7-48 as Blake Duncum takes a screamer off the bowling of Joel D'Imperio to send Adam Chesher back to the sheds. Nath Loder then stepped in with a good stumping to get Michael Behringer out and put Joel's tally up to 4 wickets……8-50. At this stage the batsmen really needed to steady the ship, they put together 9 runs before hitting the ball straight to Benny D and running, a lightning throw and first class glove work along with the longest, most excruciating umpiring decision in the history of cricket saw Brett Johnson walking back to the pavilion….9-59 and on the verge of the biggest comeback in the history of cricket……yes, I checked…. But with Joel D'Imperio bowling his last over at the northern end, we were all confident that it would be over soon. Good field placement by the captain saw the young fella Jordy Dow, who is quite possibly the best slips fieldsman in the history of the game……yes, I checked…..poised in slip for what would be the winning catch off the bowling of Joel D'Imperio.

Pandemonium ensued as the Mighty Dragons had won the comp. What a huge effort by every boy in the team to take home this premiership. Joel D'Imperio finished with the amazing figures of 11.3 overs 4 maidens 5-17. Other notables were Hobbo with 1-11 off 6 overs, Benny 1-12 off 6 overs and as I mention before, but want to again…..Barnsey 2-0 off 5. You will notice that every boy in the team was mentioned at some stage in this report, that is because this couldn't have happened without any of these boys putting in their best. A Champion team with a proud coach…..Well done boys.

10A Engadine Vs Sylvania 1 at Gymea

Although our team were undefeated over the season, our two matches against Sylvania were close affairs, when we won the first one by 35 runs, their top cricketer being absent, then the 2nd game ended up in a thrilling tie, both teams scoring 8 wickets for 90 runs. We expected the Final to be another close match and how true the Final proved to be. On a fine and warm morning we won the toss and decided to bat first hoping the saying of "we have got 'em", "they gotta get 'em" will once again come true.

2006/07 Under 10A
Championship winning team

Our openers Brendan Curtis and Jacob Heffernan got us off to a great start until Brendan was run out for a classy 20 runs with the score 46 runs in the 23rd over. Jacob in his 1st innings since 16/12/06 due to a broken wrist was then dismissed for a patient dozen runs in the 30th over. Nathan Marciante attacked the bowlers, scoring 21 runs before losing his wicket in the 38th over. Brayden Heffernan scored 5 runs then Connor Hetherington hit up a brisk 9 runs to be dismissed in the 50th over. Joshua Johnston and Lachlan Smith both scored 2 runs each. Our total of 7 for 102 was a competitive total on the slow outfield, no boundaries were scored during our innings. To become premiers our bowlers had to gowl a good line and length, backed by keen fielding. Also their big fella Thornton had to be contained.

Their openers looked safe but found runs hard to come by, Nathan's first 4 overs cost only one run and with the score only 24 runs off 17 overs, a great return by Joel Almond created their first loss of wicket with a run out, which was the first of 4 run outs in their innings, again showing what Peter Schofields fielding drills are worth to our team. With the score only 33 runs in the 26th over we were well ahead in the run rate when Brayden Heffernan claimed a wicket through a good catch by our star wicket keeper Dylan Rae. In the meantime Thornton was looking safe and although hitting the only boundary of the match, he never got on top of the bowling.

With Sylvania only needing 22 runs off 7.4 overs left, the rain came and play was suspended by the Official Umpire to the dismay of the Sylvania camp. We found problems handling the wet ball. The umpire left the ground for around 40 minutes and on returning play commenced again and only 1.4 overs were bowled before play was suspended for the day due to drizzly rain and bad light. This meant we had to return the next day to bowl the last 6 overs to complete the match.

The weather was fine and play started with a large band of Dragon supporters in attendance and we were greeted with the news that Thornton on 28 not out was on a plane to New Zealand which meant the team was now 5 for 82. Our boys were brilliant in the field backing up a great 3 over spell from Brendan taking 3 for only 4 runs plus 2 top run outs. Brayden and Nathan bowled the other 3 overs for only 6 runs. Sylvania scored 9 for 92 failing by 10 runs, giving us the well deserved Premiership the boys earned with their team work and mateship, that developed over the season. Nathans 10 overs only cost 11 runs. Other bowlers to shine were Brayden with 1 for 10 off 9 overs, Thomas Meyer 0 for 17 off 8 overs and Jake Goulding 0 for 15 off 7 overs. Our wicket keeper Dylan only allowed 3 byes, he's certainly developing into a top keeper. All boys fielded well, Mitchell Aitken was one of the best.

The Sylvania team in their 3 matches against us, were consistent scoring 90, 90 and 92 all in 50 overs each innings. Our team with their parents celebrated back at the Anzac Oval Complex where the club had a BBQ for everyone who turned up from our Junior teams. The Final score was Engadine 7 for 102 defeated Sylvania 9 for 92. The Team: Brendan Curtis (Capt), Nathan Marciante (Vice Capt), Thomas Meyer, Jacob Heffernan, Brayden Heffernan, Lachlan Smith, Connor Hetherington, Joshua Johnston, Jake Goulding, Dylan Rae, Joel Almond, Mitchell Aitken. Coaching Staff: Peter Schofield (Head Coach), Assistants - Harry Robbins & Ryan Croom, Manager - Brad Curtis.
